Most volunteer fire companies, like Mocanaqua, are independent, privately incorporated companies just like any other company you might think of. We are not administered by, owned by or otherwise affiliated with any municipalities other than by a "gentlemen's agreement" to provide service to you, our fellow community members. Just in the past few years, law was passed by the state government that requires municipalities to be more involved with their local volunteer fire companies. While we have a working relationship with Conyngham Township but we still remain a private, independent company.
As a private, independent organization we set the standards, require the amount of training necessary, run the day-to-day administration of the business of the organization and answer your calls in emergency and non-emergency situations. We do all this with no labor or benefits cost to you or anyone else. But that doesn't mean that we are a "free" service. Far from it. We have an annual budget to pay our utility bills, insurance, maintenance on the trucks, training, protective gear for the firefighters, purchase, maintenance and replacement of a wide variety of equipment from hoses and nozzles to chain saws to rescue equipment, we have to put money aside to replace our very expensive equipment when necessary and so much more.
So who pays the bills? You do! We do receive some donation from the municipal governments that we serve on a "first due" basis, but those donations amount to very little of our annual operating budget. It is up to us to make up the balance. We make up the balance by our annual fund drive and our fundraisers. Our fund drive, simply as the name implies, is our annual effort to raise the funding we need to keep operating. Some people criticize us for not doing other "fund raisers" where one feels like they are "getting something back for the money they spend." Where our fundraisers do help , our members, like you, have very busy lives and give so much more to you than you probably realize. We believe that your fund drive donation gives you "something back for your money" in well trained and well equipped firefighters that serve you.
We hope that having a little better understanding that YOU really do fund the majority of this necessary public service through your generous donation will help you appreciate the fact that your donation really does make a difference to the entire community. Please consider sending your donation today. Every donation matters and is appreciated by all of our members.
Don't wait, we never do when you need us!!
